Blog #2 My first volunteer in Tohoku

Masashi Yamada

On October 8, I went to Rikuzentakata city, Iwate prefecture to do volunteer activity with three friends.
That is my first volunteer activity, and before going there, my image of this area is devastating and there is little facility around them.
But actually, the rehabilitation of Tohoku proceeds little by little, and there are many facilities which people can use normally. We can have used family restaurant, gas station, and hot spring! At least, it is not unconvenient for us during our trip.

Look at this picture. This is "FamilyMart", and it is temporary construction. We can buy foods and many goods as same as normal convenience store.

However, on the coast area, there are many miserable things and I can't say anything when seeing them.

Some people who can escape above a signboard "MAIYA" can have been alive, but others died because of TSUNAMI.

There are many opinions about volunteer activities. Some people says volunteer activity is hypocritical, and others it is not necessary to think of it difficultly. I fail to see which is right, but if we do volunteer activity, we will think of them. It is good opportunity for us!

  1. Today, many people in Japan often make contributions, but, they rarely do volunteer activity. So, I think volunteer activiy in the stricken areas is very good and your action was nice. But, I think we should meditate the intention of the volunteer activity at the same time. Did you do as the volunteer work in Tohoku? And, what did you think about your work?
I think it is important for you to evaluate your action.

  2. You had a good experience!! I am also interested in the volunteer for Tohoku people, but I cannot realize any action. So I respect for you. I think it is important to see the real situation at Tohoku, and to spread the idea and feeling you had there widely. Please tell us your volunteer activities in detail. I am looking forward to hearing that.

  3. Dear Masashi,
I think what you did was good - who says volunteers are hypocritical and what do you mean by hypocritical? I cannot imagine anyone who says volunteers are bad. What exactly did you do there?
Please reply as a comment to this blog or brush up your blog with more information. Narumi wants to know too. And Kako has some questions. Please answer us!

  4. Someone who says volunteer is hypocritical claims that some people take advantage of "3/11" and volunteer itself for two points.
The first is they want to talk about their volunteer activities in their job hunting. They think the people who did volunteer aim at their "shukatsu" being more better.
Another is they don't understand what is more important. On 3/11, many people thought they want to help Tohoku and some of them went there. However, some people says they are foolish. During an early stage of earthquake, it is more needed who has specific ability, and the Self‐Defense Forces, not non-specialist. But they didn't understand that and actually, some people who went to Tohoku bothered specialist and local people.
We have goodwill, but if we made a mistake of using it, situation might get worse and worse.

The first question is we removed many rubbles in a rice field. On 3/11, TSUNAMI occurred in coast area and it scattered them.
Second question is I want you to see my facebook wall on October 10.

I want you to click this URL. This is my belonging circle's facebook account and there are 35 pictures in this site. I think it is better to use pictures than type sentences. You can imagine the present situation in Tohoku.
