#3: TED speech (Narumi)

Narumi Tsunahima

Hello!   How do you study English?  Is it fine? In this blog, I write about my recommended internet site named 'TED'.  If you want to improve your English skill or listen to a good speech, you had better check this site.
TED has so many good speeches and presentations by various speakers in English.  In TED, you can see English and Japanese subtitle, it makes you understand the contents of speech easily.  There are speeches by famous people like Steve Jobs. Today I state my favorite speech: Patricia Ryan: Don't insist on English!
The reason why I like this speech is this is a good sample for persuasive speech.
First of all, speaker uses certain statics in her speech.  For example, ‘a language dies every 14days’.  This data is very clear and interesting for audience.  They can understand the present situation that so many languages have been died by those catchy words.
Secondly, speaker contains some amusing anecdotes in her speech.  For instance, she talks about the story of Einstein and a real Kenyan shepherd boy.  To hear these stories, audience can see that people can make a good works without special English skill.  I think that the anecdote of great person or kind of hero has a strong power to persuade audience.  She also quotes the words from Kenyan boy that is effective too.
Finally, the speaker’s position is persuasive.  At the beginning of her speech, she said that she has been teaching English for 30years.  Audience may think she is a specialist at English education to hear that.

I want to study to make persuasive speech from TED.  Thank you for reading.

  2. When seeing this site I was surprised because I was introduced by a lecturer in my presentation class of our university. But I forgot that...
Recently, I think the ability of presentation is indispensable in our society, and I want to improve presentation skill. That is because my circle needs this ability, and my presentation isn't good. So using this site, I will study what presentation is, and how to do it.

  3. Hi Narumi,
Thanks for reminding me about TED. My husband introduced it to me a long while ago, but I haven't taken full advantaget of it.
Can you download podcasts from there? Please let me know how.
Also, could you send me a link for some Steve Jobs speeches? I would like to hear him.
If you make a persuasive speech, please tell me and you can give your speech to our class - how about that?
Please reply as a comment on this blog.

    Thank you for your comment!

You have heard about this web site from your teacher.
To tell the truth, my other professor also recommends this TED speech web site.
I think TED is so popular among the people who belong to the educational job.

I did not know that Jobs lived sromy and full of drama. For example, he is an adopted child and he quitted university.
However he overcame his crises and succeeded the big project.
I think his presentation is so good because he has a strong confidence that he gets over his life.

I will study and research about persuasive speech more.
